All MOT testing stations are regulated by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), a government body. The DVSA state you must keep any vehicles driven on the road In a roadworthy condition and results are updated on a database. So the MOT test basically checks that your car meets road safety and environmental standards.
You will receive a MOT test certificate once your test has been carried out showing you pass or fail and why, however, the certificate really is a piece of paper these days more a receipt because the details are all stored on the government database.
A vehicle that does not have a valid MOT test certificate will have its registration details automatically passed onto the Automatic Number Plate Recognition – ANPR of police vehicles. Certain static roadside cameras use ANPR too. An invalid MOT will also be a reason for your insurance company not to honour a claim. You won’t be able to renew your car tax without an MOT certificate.
The MOT Test runs from a list of the governments minimum safety standards at the time of the test and is mainly a visual inspection. Put simply The MOT Test is ensuring your car is safe, roadworthy and your emissions aren’t too high. A Service is a series of maintenance procedures and checks carried out at a set time interval or after your car has travelled a certain distance. It is designed to maintain your vehicle and its parts and ensure your car is running at its best.
Its important to bear in mind that even though your vehicle may pass its test this year there is no guarantee that your car will stay roadworthy until the next annual test, after all anything can happen in a day! Equally a pass this year does not mean a pass next year, as we know cars have a mind of their own.
But don’t worry if your car does fail its test as we re-test* for free.
